BYU Star Gibb Details Faith in Skipping Sunday Practice Before Win

BYU Cougars guard Delaney Gibb explained the team's decision to skip practice on Sunday for religious reasons ahead of a 70-67 victory over Kansas in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. The sophomore, who scored 12 points in the win, said the choice reflects the program's culture and faith, with priorities beyond basketball including Jesus Christ. Sydney Benally led BYU with 15 points in the game last week.

The Cougars, coached by Lee Cummard, finished the season 26-12 but missed the NCAA Tournament, earning a spot in the WBIT instead. BYU, affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, adheres to Sabbath observance that prohibits organized athletic activities on Sundays. Gibb's comments, shared via the school's website, drew widespread attention during the week.

Gibb averaged 18.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game to lead the team, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors after her 2025 Big 12 Freshman of the Year award. The Cougars fell to Columbia in the next round on Wednesday, ending their postseason run.

Gibb plans to return for her junior season.
